A recent report from the Ed Week Research Center found that kindergartners are showing an increase in temper tantrums, attributed to pandemic-related stress and parental pressures. While these reports highlight the problem, they rarely offer practical solutions for educators, leaving teachers to navigate challenging behaviors on their own.
At Luminova Academy, we understand that gifted and talented students may face unique social-emotional challenges. High sensitivity, intensity, and perfectionism can sometimes lead to frustration or emotional outbursts — even in highly capable learners. Addressing these behaviors thoughtfully is crucial to helping students thrive academically and emotionally.
In my experience teaching students with disabilities in urban schools, I learned that disruptive behaviors can be managed through preparation, creativity, and collaboration. For example, when a student struggled with intense emotions and movement needs, I partnered with another teacher and her students to create safe alternatives and strategies that respected the student’s needs while maintaining a positive learning environment.
At Luminova Academy, we prioritize supporting educators and parents to help gifted and talented students navigate these challenges. Here are three strategies that are especially effective for our learners:
- Provide clear directions and reassurance. Gifted students may overthink or feel intensely frustrated. Help them feel safe and understood to reduce emotional escalation.
- Offer constructive alternatives. For example, “When you stop, you can draw, journal, or lead a class project” provides an outlet for intensity in positive ways.
- Reflect and problem-solve afterward. Discuss what happened and explore strategies together so students feel empowered to self-manage in the future.
At Luminova Academy, we are committed to equipping teachers, staff, and parents with the tools and strategies to support gifted and talented learners. By combining student-driven learning, social-emotional support, and collaboration with families, we ensure that every child can explore their potential while developing resilience, self-regulation, and leadership skills.
Gifted and talented students can be intense, but intensity is not a problem — it’s a strength. At Luminova Academy, we help students harness that strength to grow, create, and thrive.
