Public schools were originally designed to prepare young people for the workforce — mostly manual labor jobs, not management positions. Elite families sent their children to private schools, while the majority were trained for basic work. Over time, our schools have evolved in structure, but the fundamental approach to education hasn’t changed much.

Today, the world is different. Do our schools foster innovation every day? Or do we simply spend the year preparing students for standardized tests? The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released its 2024 findings in September 2025, showing troubling results: 12th-grade reading scores are 10 points lower than in 1992, and math scores are the lowest since 2005. These numbers make it clear — we need a change.

It’s easy to blame parents, teachers, or administrators for declining scores, but the root of the problem is deeper. We have lost innovation, creativity, and the ability to solve real-world problems in our schools.

Parents are frustrated, too, as seen in the rise of private school enrollment and homeschooling. But parents are not the enemy — they hold invaluable knowledge about their children. The solution is collaboration. We must work together with families to build an educational experience that prioritizes curiosity, creativity, and real-life problem-solving.

At Luminova Academy, our approach starts with innovation and partnership. By designing student-driven learning pathways, encouraging experimentation, and integrating project-based experiences, we are rethinking what school can be. Education should not be about more of the same; it should prepare students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

It’s time to reclaim education for creativity, leadership, and purpose.
